![]() ![]() The D3i’s buffers are the result of lengthy listening and measurement sessions says Goller. The main task of such buffers is isolating a circuit from its load to avoid voltage sag and to minimize distortion over long cable runs. Aside from a quality power supply, Gamut boss Lars Goller focused hard on the quality of his output buffer. Anything beastlier still will eventually trigger their protection circuit. The preamp too adopts a dual-mono layout including channel-specific transformers. Gamut claims that even nastier loads won’t cause issues as low as 1.5Ω. Having a digital amp control on the PC12+ I thought was very valuable especially when experimenting a lot with duals and placement. It does have mildly more overall output but I was never listening at high levels so didn't really take advantage of it. In the 16 Hz mode, a pair of PB12-Plus will provide about 40-50% higher dynamic output than a pair of PB-2000s, along with considerably better deep extension and higher clean output in the 13-18 Hz band.”In my experience the biggest difference was cleaner bass and more output under 20hz in extended mode which I enjoyed. SVS may take that opportunity to enhance the driver and get more performance out of it.When I was considering moving from PC-2000 to PC12+ this is what SVS told me:“In the 20 Hz mode, a pair of PB12-Plus will provide about 60-70% higher dynamic output than a pair of PB-2000s, along with comparable deep extension. They will probably rename the Plus series the ‘3000’ series, since that fills the gap between the 2000s and 4000s. GamuT then modifies the drivers by impregnating the cones with a “natural oil.” Goller has compared this to the strings on a Stradivarius versus the violin as a whole, the violin being presumably the cabinet. The drivers are high- quality, and made by ScanSpeak to GamuT’s specifications. Incidentally, the cabinet and crossover design must be taken as the justification of the price, since the drivers probably account for only a small part of the cost. We apologize greatly for not having pointed this out more precisely.”The composite result from the GamuT approach is supposed to be a sound that is not overtly colored by pitched resonances- multiple resonances with different frequencies will sound less colored than a single resonant frequency for the whole cabinet- but at the same time “life” and correct decay are supposed to be preserved by the comparative absence of damping of the enclosure. The total board, however, is actually 28mm thick, and consists of an inner part made from 16 layers of 1mm veneers, the outer part is 12mm thick and made from six pieces of 2mm veneers. This is probably due to the fact that one only ‘sees’ the outer 12mm layer. ![]()
